What’s big in Japan: The nine-month reign of Youkai Watch

This week is a slow one for sales in Japan, with no games managing to sell over 100,000 copies. Sales are so slow that games which didn’t even enter the top 10 last week like Pro Baseball Spirits 2014 and Kirby Triple Deluxe managed to do so this week, even though their weekly sales numbers are down from last week.

Of particular interest is Level 5′s Youkai Watch, which is in the top ten despite having been released nine months ago. Level 5 is currently pulling out all the stops to sell this franchise, including running two different manga series and an anime which began running in January this year. I’ve personally never played the game, and the fact that it seems to be such a huge success makes me wonder if I’m missing out on an important piece of Japanese culture.
